Red-light Cameras Go Dark Across California

California Watch: “While the state collects millions of dollars from red-light cameras at intersections, a few California cities are starting to question whether the safety benefits are worth the high cost to their own coffers. . . . Other cities have rejected automatic ticketing programs as well, including Union City near San Jose, Yucaipa and Costa Mesa, Cupertino, Compton, El Monte, Fairfield, Fresno, Fullerton, Indian Wells, Irvine, Maywood, Montclair, Moreno Valley, Paramount, Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands, Roseville, San Carlos, Santa Fe Springs, Santa Maria, Santa Rosa and Upland.”

Tempe Man Sues, Claims Photo Enforcement is Fraud

Arizona Republic: “A Tempe man is suing to get rid of the city’s photo enforcement system, saying it commits fraud by issuing tickets to people who weren’t really speeding. Daniel Arthur Gutenkauf, 59, of Tempe said the system couldn’t differentiate between him and his identical twin brother, but sent him a citation anyway.”

CA Red Light Cameras Nailing Perps for Lots of Violations of Law

Findlaw: “The LA Times now reports that the intersection cameras may be put to work for more than just red light violations. . . . Other violations include: talking on a cellphone, not wearing a seat belt, not yielding to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, reckless driving, and expired registration.”

California Court Rules Red Light Camera Evidence is Hearsay & Not Admissible as Evidence

In People v. Khaled the Appellate Division of the Orange County Superior Court ruled on July 22, 2010, that red-light camera photos were hearsay and not admissible as evidence to prove the defendant ran a red light.

Congressman Says Red-light Cameras are All About Money, Not Safety

Knoxnews: “U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan Jr. thinks he knows why cash-strapped communities around the country are installing red-light traffic cameras, and it has nothing to do with making streets and highways safer. It’s about making money, he said. . . . ‘If it’s not, then let everybody who is fined contribute to some private charity (instead of paying the ticket)’.”
